Banaras, a premium spices brand from the House of Naila, draws its identity from the depth and richness of India’s cultural legacy. The brand is conceived as more than a packaging exercise, using design as a storytelling medium that reflects tradition, craft, and provenance. Every visual element is designed to evoke a sense of place and history, allowing the brand to stand apart through meaning rather than ornamentation.

At the heart of Banaras lies a strong respect for indigenous Indian artistry. The visual language is inspired by traditional architectural details, most notably the intricate geometry of jalis found across historic Indian structures. These patterns are treated as integral design systems rather than surface decoration, woven consistently across the packaging to express authenticity, cultural depth, and a clear connection to Indian heritage.

WHY

AND HOW

[1]

PROBLEM

In a crowded spices market dominated by generic visuals and surface level cultural references, there was a need for a brand that could authentically represent India’s depth of craft and heritage. Existing packaging within the category often relied on clichés, offering little differentiation or meaningful connection to origin. For Banaras, the challenge was to build a premium identity that could communicate cultural richness and provenance without feeling ornamental or outdated, while still standing out on shelf.

SOLUTION

The brand identity for Banaras was developed as a design led storytelling system rooted in authentic Indian artistry. Drawing inspiration from traditional architectural elements, particularly the intricate geometry of jalis, a distinctive visual language was created that feels both timeless and refined. These motifs were integrated as core structural elements across the packaging rather than applied as decoration, allowing each product to clearly express its cultural context and origin. Through this considered approach, Banaras establishes a strong, premium presence that celebrates Indian heritage with clarity, restraint, and contemporary relevance.
